The S-97 Raider is a light tactical helicopter intended for assault and attack roles developed as a follow-on program to the X2 technology demonstrator also developed by Sikorsky. The X2 technology demonstration program began in 2005. The S-97 Raider aircraft has a cabin for six passengers and has the ability to carry armament. The S-97 will be capable of 10,000-foot hover out of ground effect on a 95-degree day. Like the X2, it will be designed to feature twin coaxial counter-rotating main rotors and a pusher propeller that enables to cruise at 220 knots. Other innovative technologies include fly-by-wire flight controls, hub drag reduction, active vibration control, and an integrated auxiliary propulsion system. In July 2011, Sikorsky announced that the US military was funding the design, assembly and flight test of two S-97 prototypes to evaluate the viability of a fast and maneuverable next-generation rotorcraft for a variety of combat missions.
